Problem: Despite enabling the Maintenance > Remote Administration Access feature, you cannot access the router via telnet or HTTP over the WAN port.
Speculation: As far as I can tell from experimenting with both Gen-I and Gen-II DSL-50X devices, telnet and HTTP access to the router from the WAN port was disabled in the firmware very early on as a somehwat over-reaction to vulnerability claims. I have only ever had one person report that telnet and HTTP access worked via the WAN port.
Solution: I use SSH via a forwarded port (TCP 22) to access a system behind the router and then telnet back into the router via the LAN port. You could, of course, use this approach with telnet rather than SSH, but SSH is far more secure. NOTE: Someone suggested forwarding the telnet (21 TCP) and HTTP (80 TCP) ports to the router itself, but I have not yet tried this approach.
